Although this has been an incredibly dreary spring, I can’t say how lucky I feel to have the opportunity to work outside and help my father prepare for the season (which is already upon us). It’s been almost two months now that I have been ‘vice farmer’ as my father has officially titled me – and I have already learned an incredible amount. Each week when I come back (to work for the two-three days that I work here weekly) I have to run around checking on all the new growth – just like a little kid, although I don’t think I am necessarily a kid anymore (but all of us can still have that kid inside come jumping out, no?).
However, even though I love this job, I have to say that perhaps for many potential ‘vice-farmers’ the way we began the season may turn some off. I spent the first two days of work shoveling chicken poop out of the chicken’s winter coop… and luckily it was beautifully those days, so I was sure to get all the possible chicken poop dust in my hair, eyes and nose. Although I guess the wind helped diminish the intensity of the odour?
But now the first two crops are officially upon us. Asparagus and Rhubarb have come in full force and both taste rather scrumptious if you ask me. I am sure that some people have seen how asparagus grows, but before my father decided to start farming a few years ago, and showed me an asparagus plant – I really had no idea. So for any of you who would like to see what they are like in production, I thought I would show a few here… I hope you enjoy them – and if your heart (or taste buds?) so desire, come and get some!
